County Proclaims General Chappie James Day February 11th

Escambia County, FL (Newsradio 92.3) -- Escambia County will honor one of Pensacola's most distinguished military heroes next week. At tomorrow's Board of Commissioners meeting they will proclaim February 11th as General Daniel "Chappie" James Day. James, who was born and raised in Pensacola, became America's first African American four-star general. He was a Tuskegee Airman who flew combat missions in Korea and Vietnam before becoming commander of North American Aerospace Defense Command in 1975. James broke racial barriers throughout his military career and became a symbol of achievement and perseverance. He died in 1978, just weeks after retiring. The proclamation honors his legacy and contributions to the nation.
