Congressman Patronis Comments on Meta Settlement, Jelly Roll, Carrier Renaming and More

Meta's Settlement and Kids Online
Patronis says Meta's recent $1.8 billion settlement over child safety concerns is really just the company admitting it has a problem — but he doesn't think the dollar amount comes close to forcing real change. Spread over ten years, he points out, it works out to about $180 million a year, which he says is smaller than Escambia County's annual budget. He's backing a Section 230 reform bill that would hold social media companies responsible for predatory content and late-night push notifications aimed at kids — and says he's found an unlikely ally in a Democratic member of Congress from California who told him the idea crosses party lines because everyone cares about protecting kids. Patronis also praised Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier's decision to reject Meta's settlement money in favor of pursuing tougher policy changes in court, comparing it to holding out for real accountability rather than a token payout.
Ford Class Carrier and the Doris Miller Question
Patronis defended President Trump's push to overhaul systems on the Navy's newest aircraft carrier class, including the electromagnetic catapult system that's had documented problems since it debuted. He says the Ford class has plenty of strengths, but its first real stress test revealed deficiencies worth fixing — and argues the president's public pressure campaign is really aimed at forcing a notoriously slow-moving Pentagon bureaucracy to act faster. On the more sensitive question of reportedly renaming the carrier currently honoring Doris Miller — a Black sailor awarded the Navy Cross for heroism at Pearl Harbor — after President Trump, Patronis said he didn't know enough about where those reports originated to comment on them directly.
Canada, Trade, and a Lake Named America
Patronis defended the president's proposal to rename Lake Ontario as leverage in trade negotiations with Canada, framing it as a deliberate irritant designed to keep Canadian officials talking and pressure their leadership. He compared it to other tactics the administration has used to extract concessions, pointing to steel tariffs as an example of a policy he says has genuinely helped American manufacturing jobs.
Jelly Roll
Patronis stood by his earlier comments suggesting Jelly Roll isn't welcome in Florida after the singer joked about President Trump during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live. He compared the backlash to the Dixie Chicks controversy from the early 2000s and said the singer misjudged an audience that skews conservative. He believes more of his Northwest Florida listeners are frustrated with Jelly Roll than defending him. Andrew McKay disagreed with the framing, arguing that criticizing a joke is different from suggesting someone shouldn't be welcome in the state over their viewpoint.
The National Debt
Asked about the national debt closing in on $40 trillion, Patronis said it matters and ties it to the broader push to rebuild the economy after COVID-era disruptions, though he acknowledged meaningful progress on the debt itself will be difficult within a single presidential term.
