Crestview, FL (Newsradio 92.3 -- A Safe Haven Baby Box has been opened in Crestview -- it's a way for women to safely and anonymously surrender a newborn child. It's the first box of its type in the Panhandle.
The box is located at the Crestview fire station. The goal of the Safe Haven box is to save children and stop the illegal abandonment of babies. The parents just open the door and place their 30-day-old or younger baby in the box, it automatically calls 911 and first responders take the child and provide medical care.
Although this is the only "Safe Haven Box" in the Panhandle -- Florida does have Safe Haven laws that allow parents to take a child to any fire station or hospital to surrender a one-month-old or younger child anonymously.
