Pensacola, FL (Newsradio 92.3) -- There will be a police escort for the body of slain Walton County deputy Will May this afternoon starting at Sacred Heart hospital in Pensacola.
The suspect who shot and killed Walton County Deputy William May yesterday has been identified as 58-year-old Timothy Mark Jarvinen. He resided on Shakespeare Court in DeFuniak Springs, which is nearby the Dollar General on Highway 90 where the incident took place. Jarvinen reportedly biked to the store yesterday afternoon.
PPD Spokesman Mike Wood reacted to the tragedy this morning. "Our hearts are heavy... our thoughts are certainly with Deputy May, his family, and the Walton County sheriff's office."
Wood says incidents like these are far too common and recounted an incident a few years ago involving a PPD traffic officer that shot a suspect while defending his weapon as he investigated a minor hit and run. Wood says "the truth the matter is things like this are going to happen, it's part of being in law enforcement. It's a risk you are willing to take every day that you put the uniform on."
Deputy May's body will be escorted back to Walton County at around 3 o'clock this afternoon. The procession will take Bayou Boulevard to I-110, then I-10 as they head home to Walton County.
