Hammerhead on Orange Beach was Likely ‘Fishing Mortality’

PREGNANT SHARK WAS LIKELY ‘FISHING MORTALITY’ — David Wayne

Orange Beach, AL (Newsradio 92.3) — Researchers in Alabama say the Hammerhead shark that washed ashore in Orange Beach last week was probably killed by fishing. Researchers at Mississippi State University — who performed a necropsy on the shark, say the cause of death was impossible to determine for sure and say that none of the organs had signs of trauma. The shark washed up last week, researchers quickly learned it was pregnant with 40 shark pups when it died. The shark pups will be donated to Alabama schools for educational use. They’re currently working to determine the age of the shark and where it was born, and trying to learn more about its feeding habits.
